‘There’s never enough time in the day’.
No child or teenager ever muttered these words.
As a 10-year old, I remember that twelve hours seemed like a perfectly adequate time to play with your friends, fight your brother and eat cake.
As you become a teenager, time actually slows down to the extent that filling your day becomes quite hard. This slowing down of time causes your parents to get increasingly frustrated by the fact you have more time than they do. You helpfully point out that they would have a lot more time if they didn’t waste half their day telling you to get out of bed. Your advice only serves to anger them further.
So, what’s the science behind what is happening to time? Well, from your birth onwards, time is stretched backwards like an elastic band, slowing it down, until one particular event in your life happens.
Parenthood.
Then someone, somewhere (who has a lot to answer for and was never a parent) lets go of the elastic band and your time contracts at lightning speed. Gone. From that point onwards there’s never enough time in the day.
You set early morning alarms, schedules and routines in a desperate attempt to find more of it. You become an expert juggler of tasks. A plate spinner of responsibilities. You grow accomplished in your new abilities and a little proud.
Then, each year, early October arrives and ‘Christmas Time’ rears its little red-hatted head. Christmas time is the fastest time of all. Even faster than your precious 2-week summer holiday time. Christmas time is like 10x time. You cannot believe it’s here again. It feels like only yesterday when your hand was stuffing chestnuts into the back end of the turkey.
You try ignoring it. But you can’t, Christmas advertising is draped like tinsel everywhere you look.
You know that if you don’t get organised now, you will have to rush your Christmas shopping – which drains the fun out of it.
