Chitra's portrait

I. Inclusive. Imagination.

Chitra Soundar

Children's Picture Book Author

Chitra’s workshops aim to give kids permission to use their imaginations to include everyone, including themselves, in their stories.

“When I go into schools I find that non-white kids don’t put kids like themselves - kids with names from their community that look like them - into the stories we write together. They don’t think about the ‘I,’ and so it impacts on their ability to be inclusive, even of themselves, and it limits the way they use their imaginations. I suggest they rewrite their stories using names from their background and characters who look like them. They soon realise how much better their stories become.”
