Let’s talk about July birthdays

JULY is June’s even hotter, even stickier twin. The solstice has come and gone, and we really are in the thick of it now. Welcome to summer in earnest.

What does it mean to be born in July? Are summertime babies different from the rest of us? What kind of personality does a July birthday bestow upon the lucky few?

I’ve done several intensive, highly scientific studies (read: Googled for an hour), and I’m ready to tell you all I know about the delightful people with a birthday in July.

What kind of people are born in July?

If you’re into astrology, then you already know that most of July falls under the Cancer zodiac sign, with the tail end from the 22nd to the 31st part of the Leo cub club. If you’d like to know more about what your own personal star sign means, I suggest you go to one of the bajillion other sites out there that help you explore it.

Instead, I’ll tell you what I know. You might expect people born in July to be rather over-the-top, but there you’d be wrong. It’s true that the July-born have a tendency towards the bombastic when under pressure, but it’s only a thin veneer. Poke it and the illusion will fall, revealing a rather sensitive individual underneath. Those born in July are surprisingly philosophical and introspective. Their birthday month often prompts them to reflect on nature and meaning, whilst everyone else is getting sunburnt at the barbecue.

This hidden headiness means that – if you can get them to calm down – people born in July are wonderful conversational partners, tending to listen just as well as they speak. These bunch have layers, even as the rest of us are stripping ours off in the sun.

They are also exceptionally good with food. Both cooking and eating.

What famous people were born in July?

July’s given us some truly lovely folks. Tom Hanks, for one. Who doesn’t love Tom Hanks? Tom Cruise, too. Top Gun was a thing.

Two hard-to-pronounce people born in July are Benedict Cumberbatch and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Alexander the Great was a July baby. By the age of 30, he had conquered a great deal of Asia and northeast Africa, claiming one of the largest empires in history. I’m thirty now, and I pay my electricity bills on time. I guess I should have tried harder to be born in July.

Women are born in July, too. J.K Rowling celebrates her birthday on the 31st of July, barely but definitively qualifying. Elizabeth Moss of Mad Men fame, Frida Kahlo of paintings and eyebrows, and poet Margaret Walker were all born in July.

What it’s like to celebrate your birthday in July

Statistically, July is the hottest month of the year in the Northern hemisphere (and the coldest one in the southern. Are any Aussies reading this? G’day!). These are the true “dog days” of summer, which are so named due to the heliacal rising of the star Sirius. Today, they just make us think of sweaty mutts.

Beach birthdays are popular for the July-born – a privilege afforded to few. Picnics, so long as there’s shade. And nighttime birthday revelry free of coats – now there’s a good time. Everyone loves a July birthday.

Good thing, too – July is the second most popular birth month, just behind September. Why? July is 9 months after nippy November… and I’ll let you connect the dots yourself.

Who do you know with a July birthday?

So this month, let’s celebrate July. Might seem a bit self-referential, but I always did love a good möbius strip. Has Wimbledon wrapped up yet?

Having a birthday in the other four-letter-begins-with-J month is sweet indeed. Were you born in July? Do you know anyone who was? Does all this verbiage match them from tip to toe, or are they a summer bird of a different feather? Let me know in the comments below.

  1. Fascinating reading ? especially for myself being awake most of the night ? my daughter was born in July and is now due her 1st baby on the 27th July.
I certainly pity her at the moment in this heat. I was actually due on the 30th June but somehow July 7th she decided to make an appearance after fighting her way out for 27 hours ?
Here’s a fact my birthday is 7th October, my mum is 17th October and my brother is the 27th October ?
All the sevens ? Remember to top up the sunscreen even Lobsters with bad hair bed protection too ☀️??

      Hi Michelle,

      Thanks for writing in.

That is very interesting indeed – does the number ‘7’ fall into your category for lucky numbers then?

I hope your daughter and her little one are staying in the shade at the moment – this clammy heat is almost unbearable!

Don’t you worry, this lobster has learned his lesson. He’s hiding from the sun for a while now!

      Thanks for writing in.

      Kind regards,

      Joe

    • Some of the things you said about July birthdays was definitely taken from Cancer personalities. I, on the other hand, am a Leo having been born on July 27th so not much of that pertains to me. However, it does remind me of my mother who was born on July 14th.

  2. I was born on 7-7 and weighed 7lb 7 oz!! But I held off arriving 8:02
